What is a Loan?

A loan is money that you borrow and agree to pay back over a set period of time with interest. The amount of money you borrow is called principal, and interest is the cost for borrowing the money. The length of time set to pay back the loan is known as the term.

It is best to get a loan only for very large purchases or in an emergency. Getting a large loan or getting many loans that you can't pay back can cause huge financial problems, because it can get very difficult to pay them back each month.

There are many benefits to getting a loan. A loan gives you the money you need to pay for something big like a house, a car, college tuition, or major home repairs when you don't have the cash to cover the purchase. Most people could not afford to do these things without loans.
Loans come in a variety of shapes and sizes each performing a different function and having different interest rates. Loan rates are variable, depending on status.

Loan repayments will depend on the amount borrowed and term. Loans are taken out with selected, reputable institutional money lenders.

Depending on the type of loan chosen you can borrow anywhere from $500 to $1,000,000 and can repay it over a period of between six months and twenty-five years.

Nowadays, it is quite easy for most people to qualify for a loan of one sort or another even if they have a bad credit history. Loans can be applied for in person, by telephone or more commonly now, over the Internet.

Loans can be used for any purpose. A loan can help you with home improvements such as a new kitchen or bathroom, that once-in-a-lifetime holiday, your dream car or repaying debts to reduce your monthly outgoings to a more manageable amount.

One of the most common types of loan is a secured loan. A secured loan is a loan which is backed by assets belonging to the borrower in order to decrease the risk assumed by the lender. The assets may be forfeited to the lender if the borrower fails to make the necessary payments. The number one asset is property which could be your home, your office, your farm or your factory.

A secured loan uses your home as security. It is suitable if you want to raise a large amount; are having problems getting an unsecured loan; or have a poor credit history. Lenders are more flexible with their underwriting, making a secured Loan possible when you may have been turned down for an unsecured loan.

A secured Loan is a loan that a lender provides on the understanding that a property is secured against the loan. This type of loan is usually provided with a lower interest rate than an unsecured loan because you will have secured your property against it.

A secured loan enables homeowners to borrow capital and offset the risk against the value of their property. This means that anyone taking out a secured loan is effectively using their property to guarantee the loan. If the borrower fails with the repayments, there could be a possibility their home is at risk.

Secured loans are normally quicker to arrange because the lender has some security to offset against the loan should you default on the repayments. In most cases this is the cheapest type of loan with interest rates on the loan a few percentage points above base rate.

The only problem with loans in general, is that they will have to be paid back.

Loan Option fo College Students

You just finished high school and realize you have two months to work and save up for your very expensive post secondary education. Your parents are willing to help you out a bit, you have a very impressive $4.32 stashed in your savings account, and you have a rewarding job at Wal-Mart 3 days a week. You should be set right? Wrong. College and university is one of the biggest financial commitments you will make during your life. . Most students get a loan of some sort and almost all have credit cards. That's why it's important to know you have options

Government Student Loans

Here in Canada and in many parts of the world there are government student loan programs which almost anyone is eligible for. The loan amount is usually based on a number different factors including, how much financial support you are receiving from parents, and the total cost of tuition and other fees. The major benefit to a government issued student loan is that most require repayment only after you have completed your studies. However, like any loan, a heavy interest rate is the downside.

Student loan through a bank

Most major financial institutions offer student loans or student line of credit. There are several benefits to this form of loan. Most often the interest rates are reasonable, and minimal payment is usually expected. Most banks even further the convenience by attaching the loan to an existing account, or by giving you a credit card. Remember, banks "bank" on the fact that you will spend that money.

Credit cards

Many students rely on their credit card(s) to get them through school. On a short term basis, credit cards are a great source of cash which is easily accessible However unlike a loan, you have to start paying back immediately (monthly), often with outrageous interest rates. Most times, students rely too much on credit cards and find themselves having money trouble before the school year is even finished. And once a credit card is "maxed" and you are unable to pay the minimal payment, additional interest rates and "service" fees are attached.

College educations are not cheap. In fact, tuition fees go up by staggering numbers every year. The truth of the matter is, unless you have parents who are willing to flip the bill or some other support, you are likely going to need a loan or some sort of financial assistance. The best advice is to educate yourself. Know what is involved in a loan, know the interest rates, and know your responsibility of payment. A four year education is an awesome financial burden, so it's important to know your options.

What are Personal loans?

They are unsecured loans that a borrower obtains for various purposes. This type of loan is often used to consolidate outstanding debt into one monthly payment, but it can be used for other things such as paying for a wedding, a vacation, or something similar. It is an unsecured loan because the borrower doesn't put any assets up as collateral.

What Are The Advantages?

Loans for personal purposes are useful for borrowers who don't have assets to offer as collateral (such as a house) but have a need to borrow money. When this type of loan is used to consolidate debt, for example, the typical result is a reduction in interest being paid plus the convenience of making a single payment to one lender.

What Are The Disadvantages?

Because it is unsecured, this type of loan usually comes with a higher interest rate than other types of borrowing. The lender is taking a greater risk by lending without the security of collateral, so they charge the borrower more to help offset the risk.

Additionally, it often comes with restrictions on how you can spend the money you receive, and the amount you can borrow is usually less than with a secured loan. Again, the bank is taking more of a risk by underwriting an unsecured loan so they want to make sure the money is used for the purpose stated in the loan application.

What If I Have A Poor Credit Rating?

Your credit rating will be a consideration for the lender. The combination of a poor credit history and an unsecured loan is unattractive to many lenders, so if you're in this situation you will likely have to work a little harder to get a loan.

If your purpose for taking out a loan is debt consolidation, though, some lenders are more willing to consider your application because your intent is to reduce debt and get your finances back in order. When in doubt, talk to a loan representative over the phone or in person to discuss your options.

Where Can I Find A Lender?

There is no shortage of lenders who make unsecured loans so you have many resources available to you. If you already have a lending relationship established with your bank or another institution, this is a good place to start. Many lenders are more willing to underwrite such a loan for a customer who has already demonstrated a responsible and timely payment history.

The internet is also a rich source of prospective lenders. Whatever your personal situation, there is probably a lender somewhere out there who specializes in borrowers such as yourself. Make sure you fully understand the "fine print" of their loan policies and expect to pay a higher interest rate if the lender regards you as a higher risk borrower.

For many borrowers, an unsecured loan is a good choice for their specific circumstances. Whether it's debt consolidation, paying for a wedding or some other purpose, if you're considering personal loans it's important to check out multiple lenders and look for a lending program that meets your needs.

Why Student Loans are Better Than Credit Cards

You need some more money for college expenses this semester. Do you whip out a credit card to pay for your books, or do you apply for a federal or private loan? Well, consider the options ?

-With a federal loan, your interest rate will be low (around 5%) and your payments will be deferred until 6-9 months after graduation.

-With a private loan, the interest rate will be slightly higher than with a federal loan but will still be lower than average. In addition, you will only need to make interest payments until after graduation.

-With a credit card, on the other hand, the interest rate can be as high as 21%. Interest begins accruing almost immediately, and you need to begin paying off the bill the next month. This is not to say that credit cards do not have a place in your college life. It is good to have one national card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover) on hand to help you build a positive credit history and to provide security in emergencies. When you decide to apply for a card, compare annual fees, interest rates, and introductory offers. And to keep yourself out of debt, try to-

-Pay your balance each month to avoid interest charges

-Pay your bill on time to avoid late charges

-Avoid cash advances, which come with large finance charges and interest that begins accruing immediately.
